The program includes organized excursions designed to show students the breadth of Kenyan culture, environment and society. The following excursions are usually planned every term. KEI reserves the right to change planned excursions for destinations of equal value and interest. Excursions may change based on availability, local festivals and interest. Academic year and multiple term students participate on planned excursions during one of their terms.

Nairobi (day activity)
Students will visit downtown Nairobi to discover the many contrasts between contemporary and traditional Kenya. Downtown has much to offer, from numerous shops and restaurants, to cultural significant sites and museums.

Nairobi National Park (day activity)
Your very first introduction to the Kenya's animals will be in the Nairobi National Park, and for a good reason: it's within the city limits. A leisurely drive through the park will show you the delights of the Kenyan country with a view over the city skyline, a fascinating juxtaposition. And hopefully, you will see some wildlife in the process.

Bomas of Kenya (day activity)
This cultural and living history center preserves tribal customs and practices. The center consists of outdoor exhibits showcasing bomas (traditional homesteads) of the different tribes living in Kenya. Dancing, drumming, singing, storytelling and other folk arts are presented in an amphitheater in the afternoon.

Maasai Mara Reserve (extended overnight excursion)
This large nature reserve is adjacent to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, and is home to the Maasai people, a tribe known for their proximity to nature and the land. The Maasai people are the original inhabitants of the area, as well as much of Kenya, and they have resisted most efforts to modernize. Traditional Maasai life centers around their cattle, which is the main source of food and wealth. They are easily identified by their bright red patterned clothing. The nature reserve also has some of the most abundant wildlife in Africa.

Rift Valley (extended overnight excursion; not offered every term)
Running from Lebanon to Mozambique, the Great Rift Valley passes right through Kenya and lends it much of its geographical and geological distinction. A rift is where two or more tectonic plates join, and often is characterized by volcanoes, mountains, and a higher concentration of geothermic activity. Because of the soil sedimentation patterns in the Kenyan portion of the Rift Valley, a relatively large number of fossils and prehistoric imprints have been preserved. "Lucy," the nearly complete skeleton of an australopithecine, was unearthed there. Many archaeologists and anthropologists believe the human species originated in the Rift Valley.

Mombasa (extended overnight excursion)
Mombasa is the major port city of Kenya, and has been ruled by Portuguese, Arabs and British. As such, it enjoys a thriving intercultural atmosphere. In the marketplaces, Muslim women in black hidjabs mix with Swahili women in brightly-colored kanga. While youre in Mombasa, be sure to spend some time at the beach! The beaches and coral reefs are the best that Africa has to offer.
