INDIA: Pune

INDIA STUDENT LIFE

Due to the large number of universities and research institutes in the city of Pune, it is often called the Oxford of the East. There are numerous entertainment and recreational options such as historical sites, temples, museums, clubs, cafes, restaurants, shopping centers, gardens and parks and so on. Students from foreign countries often spend their free time exploring the intricacies of the Indian culture. Apart from the KEI planned excursions and activities, the International Student Council also organizes a variety of cultural events, parties and sports.

Housing & meals

Students live in the university residence hall (hostel). The rooms are double-occupancy and each room has an attached bathroom. Every room has two single beds, 2 desks and 2 cupboards. Students can choose to dine at the residence hall cafeteria, which serves a choice of Indian staples. Pune has many restaurants and cafes. Compared to the USA, the cost of food is inexpensive.

Getting around town

Public transport in Pune is safe and reliable. Autorickshaws (motorized tricycles), are the most convenient form of transportation – both in terms of cost as well as accessibility. Buses within the city and its suburbs are operated by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). The bus fares are much lower than autorikshaws, however autorikshaws are the recommended choice. Since the college neighborhood is self-sufficient and most student attractions are close by, students end up walking most distances.
