Application Requirements
Applicants should read and understand the information provided on the KEI website, program literature and KEI Policies prior to submitting an application. KEI’s online application is self-guided. Applicants should gather all required information before starting the application process.
GPA
A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for most KEI programs. A minimum GPA of 2.8 (3.0 preferred) and at least two completed semesters (prior to the application deadline) of university study is required for the program in Japan. A minimum GPA of 2.8 (3.0 preferred) is required for the program in Scotland for applicants who plan to take mathematics and/or science courses. Students with a GPA below the minimum may still be considered on an individual basis depending on their personal situation. Contact KEI if you have questions.
Transcript
An official transcript from each higher education institution attended is required. (Pre-college students must submit an official transcript from their secondary institution.) If obtaining an official transcript prior to the application deadline is not possible, students may submit an unofficial transcript but will be required to provide an official transcript prior to the enrollment deadline.
Personal statement
The personal statement should be approximately 500 words and describe your academic and professional goals, what you have done thus far to achieve these goals and how studying abroad with KEI will contribute to achieving your goals.
Letter of reference
One letter of reference is required. The reference should come from your professor or a person who had a significant influence in your life (advisor, piano teacher, coach, employer, etc.)
Passport photos
A passport-sized photograph is required. Be sure to read the Passport Photo Guidelines .
Application fee
A non-refundable application fee of $100 is required. If you take advantage of KEI’s Early Enrollment option, the $100 will be applied towards your program fee. Visit the Financial Aid page for more information.
Late applications must include a non refundable processing fee of $150, in addition to the regular application fee of $100. If applying after the enrollment deadline, an $500 non-refundable enrollment confirmation deposit may also be required.
Passport information
We will need a copy of your passport information page – the one with your picture. Don’t have a passport? Don’t worry. You can still apply to the program now; just make sure to order your passport as soon as possible and submit a copy before the enrollment deadline. Your KEI advisor can assist you with this process.
Advising Session
As part of the online application, KEI will contact you to set up a phone advising sessions. Advising sessions are informal and a good opportunity for you to ask questions about the program, application and enrollment process, etc. Advising sessions also provide an opportunity for our Program Managers to learn more about your interests and needs so that we can serve you better.
Internship statement & resume
Students interested in an internship or community service must include a 250 word description of their desired placement, qualifying skills, previous experience in the field, relevant academic coursework and intended career path. Make sure to indicate your proficiency in the host country language. A resume or CV is also required.
KEI grants
Students interested in applying for a KEI Travel Grant must submit a 500 word essay outlining how the KEI Travel Grant will make a decisive difference in your study abroad plans. The essay should also include a description of your academic and extracurricular achievements, and rationale for financial assistance. A copy of your FAFSA or equivalent financial need documentation, and your resume or CV are also required.
For minors
Applicants under the age of 18 will have to complete a waiver for minors.
