ECUADOR ACADEMICS

The academic curriculum offers courses, internships (professional, clinical, research) and community service. Most courses and internships are 4 quarter (3 semester) credits. Science courses with a laboratory are 5 quarter (4 semester) credits.

Summer Options

Summer Session (Credit: 8 Quarter; 6 Semester)
The Summer Session is from mid June to mid July. Students must enroll in a Spanish Language and Ecuadorian Culture & Society courses. Community service is optional.

Summer Term (Credit: 12 Quarter; 9 Semester)
The Summer Term is from mid June to mid August. Students combine Spanish Language and Ecuadorian Culture & Society courses with an InternshipStudents may replace Spanish Language and/or Ecuadorian Culture & Society with an elective(s) with permission from KEI.

Spanish language & Ecuadorian culture

The Ecuadorian Culture & Society and Spanish Language are offered at Centro Ecuatoriano Norteamericano (CEN). The Ecuadorian Culture & Society is required. At least one Spanish Language is also required (waived for students with advanced proficiency). Spanish language courses are taught intensively in one-month sessions. Students can enroll in up to three Spanish language courses at increasing levels of proficiency during the same Quarter.

Internships & community service

Internships (for-credit) and community service (not-for-credit) allow students to learn from practical experience not attainable in a classroom setting. Internships require a commitment of 120-240 hours (3-6 credits). Service does not have a minimum requirement.Placement is based on professional interests. Previous placements include Ecomundo Centro de Estudios, VHIDA (HIV Education & Assistance), ITB Clinic, Carino Foundation, Esperanza de Bastion Popular, Casa Hogar Guayaquil, Viviendas Hogar de Cristo, Parque Historico de Guayaquil, Emela TOUR, Ecuator & Tecnoviajes, Tlelerama TV, and Museo del Astillero (Soccer in Ecuador). Actual placement may be with a different organization. Positions are available in the following professional fields.

HOST UNIVERSITY

This program is organized under the International Knowledge Center (IKC), a partnership between KEI, CEN and ITB. The IKC is situated on the campuses of CEN and ITB and managed by the KEI Onsite Director. Collectively there are more than 8,000 students studying at CEN and ITB.
